Clashing Visions: Russian Foreign Policy in The Age Of Xi And Trump

DYNAMICS OF RUSSIAN FOREIGN POLICY

This conference seeks to investigate the changing dynamics of Russian foreign policy in the context of an assertive China and the Trump Administration’s uncertain foreign policy trajectory. Scholars and graduate students working in all subfields of area studies, including comparative politics, international relations, economics, history, sociology, cultural studies and related disciplines, are invited to submit proposals for panels and paper abstracts.

RELEVANT TOPICS

Relevant topics may include, but are not limited to:

Competing visions:

  • Visions of the European Union’s Eastern Partnership, Russia’s Eurasian Economic Union, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, and China’s “One Belt, One Road” initiative
  • Sino-Russian strategic partnership: image and reality
  • Competing international narratives, normative approaches, and conceptions of the international legal order
  • Domestic and elite perception of China’s “One Belt, One Road” in Europe and Central Asia

Strategic rivalries:

  • The role of NATO in future transatlantic cooperation and Russia’s shifting military strategy
  • Geopolitical realities and the military balance in Europe and Asia
  • Beyond conventional tactics: cyber attacks and hybrid warfare
  • Vying for influence: Russia, China, and Europe in Central Asia
  • The escalating geopolitical competition in the maritime domain and its implications for  security

Domestic reactions:

  • Politicization and securitization of Islamic extremism
  • Domestic conditions and challenges for European countries to absorb the “One Belt, One Road”
  • Self-reliance and energy security
  • Rise of populism and nationalist movements

International challenges:

  • Transnational networks: the role of multinationals and non-governmental organizations in resolving international conflicts
  • International threats to China’s “One Belt, One Road” strategy
  • Institutional challenges to Western hegemony from Russia and China

We will consider proposals addressing the above and other related questions as well as other topics that are relevant to the conference theme. 
Authors are invited to submit paper abstracts and panel proposals. Abstracts and proposals should be limited to 400 words for a paper and 800 words for a panel. They should include: (1) the title of the paper or panel; (2) name, institution and email address of the author(s); (3) up to five keywords. Submissions will be anonymously peer-reviewed by a committee.

PANEL AND PAPER PROPOSALS

Submissions should be sent to oxfordconference2017@gmail.com by 31 March 2017. Notification of acceptance or rejection will be given by 7 April 2017. Full papers should not exceed 6,000 words and be produced by 1 May 2017.
